drink
Potassium Fiber Drink

A lemon and lime drink with the two things most adults fall short on. One scoop gives you 500 mg of potassium and 8 g of fiber. Stir it into a glass of water.

What is in a scoop

8 g of fiber, from acacia gum. High in fiber. One scoop carries 29 percent of the Daily Value for fiber. Acacia gum is a soluble fiber taken from the sap of the acacia tree. It won't gel or thicken the way psyllium does. It mixes into a clear, amber-brown drink, about the color of weak tea, and tastes like lightly sweetened lemon and lime rather than something you have to get through.

500 mg of potassium, as potassium citrate. A good source of potassium. That's 11 percent of the Daily Value, the 4,700 mg figure the label uses, and roughly what you'd get from a large banana. Against the Adequate Intake, which is 3,400 mg a day for men and 2,600 mg for women, it's about 15 and 19 percent. Citrate is used here rather than potassium chloride because chloride tastes bitter and metallic in water. Citrate also dissolves cleanly. There's a separate article on why 500 mg, when most potassium pills stop at 99 mg.

The rest of the pouch is allulose, malic acid, luo han guo fruit extract (monk fruit, a sweetener), natural flavors and bamboo stem/shoot extract.

Who this suits

US adults eat about 16 grams of fiber a day. Against the Adequate Intake, that leaves men 22 grams short under 51 and 14 grams short from 51, and women 9 grams and 5 grams short at the same ages. Potassium Fiber suits someone whose gap is 10 grams or more and who has tried to close it with food, or who gave up on psyllium because of the texture. The trade-off: the best-studied effects of fiber, such as lowering LDL cholesterol, belong to gel-forming fibers like psyllium, and this drink claims none of them. It also puts 500 mg of potassium in the same glass. If you already eat your target from food, you don't need it.

That 16 grams averages men and women together, and men eat a little more, so the real gap is a little smaller for men and a little larger for women. It comes from national survey data pooled in a 2015 paper by McGill and colleagues, which Kellogg, a cereal company, funded; two of its authors were paid Kellogg consultants and the third had worked for Kellogg. If you want the background on both nutrients, it's in two articles on the recommendations and the survey data: how much fiber is recommended and how much US adults eat and what 3,400 mg of potassium a day looks like on a plate.

How to take it

Stir each scoop into at least 300 mL (10 fl oz) of water, a smoothie or yogurt. It tastes best cold.

Starting on half a scoop for the first week or two is the standard advice and may make the first weeks easier. Some gas in those weeks is common, and half a scoop keeps the first step small. Then move up to a full scoop.

One scoop a day is the standard serving. If you want more fiber you can build up to two, leaving several hours between them. Take no more than two in a day, unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Two scoops give 1,000 mg of potassium. Take other medicines at least two hours before or after a scoop.

What you get

One pouch holds 60 servings, so about two months at one scoop a day.
